<p>In my position as an investment portflio manager, I often have to make phone calls to other departments in the financial organization I work for. Several months ago, I placed a phone call to our accounting department, which is located on an entirely different floor in our building. Instead of the usual voice I am used to hearing, I was pleasantly suprised by a sultry &#8220;Accounts receivable, this is Regina speaking&#8221;. After inquiring on what happened to Ralph, the accounts receivable manager I had grown to know and loathe, I was informed that Regina was taking over his old position. This was great news for me, not only because of her voice, but also because Ralph was the one person in the company I could never get along with.</p>
<p>I conducted the inquiry I needed to, said goodbye, and didn&#8217;t give it a second thought. A few days later, I had reason to call accounts receivable again. This time, in the process of conducting my business, I detected that I was being flirted with. Being a bachelor and hearing that incredible voice made me curious, but at the same time I realized that not having ever seen me, it was highly unlikely that this woman could be anywhere close to serious. I coughed it up to casual friendliness and again went back to my work. The third time I called after the changeover, Regina asked if I had been on the second floor with our mutual funds manager the previous week. I had been, so I surmised that she knew what I looked like and I answered affirmitavely.</p>
<p>This set in motion a conversation that wasn&#8217;t disguised friendliness but instead, overt flirting on her part. Now I was somehwat smitten. I said goodbye and tried to go back to my work but visions of a young buxom professional with a voice that could break a heart with a whisper had me in a frenzy. The next day, I decided it was high time I introduced myself to the new employee. I made my way down to the second floor, somewhat exited and nervous and all the while hoping to not be disappointed. I opened the door to the accounts receivable office and saw the most beautiful woman talking on her headset. She smiled at me and made a &#8220;hold on a minute&#8221; gesture. After her phone call ended, I reached out my hand and said, &#8220;Hi Regina, I&#8217;m Jim from upstairs&#8221;.</p>
<p>She answered, &#8220;Hi Jim, I&#8217;m Amy, Regina&#8217;s clerk&#8230;did you need to speak to Regina?&#8221;. My heart sank a little, and then the woman I would come to know as Regina came walking out, happy to finally meet me. As you might guess, she had the aesthetics of a water buffalo with a face that even a mother couldn&#8217;t love. I smiled, shook her hand and had a polite but short conversation before retreatring back to my office. I have since heard that as Ralph was retiring, he was able to hand pick his replacement. Why do I get the feeling that somewhere, he is laughing right now?</p>

<p>When the “experts” tell you you’re going to need a press kit for your small business I’ll bet you’re wondering why on earth you’d need one. At least, I think you’d wonder why if you think a press kit is just for the press. But the term ‘press kit’ is misleading if you ask me because press kits aren’t just what their name implies.</p>
<p>I prefer to call them small business information kits or information packages instead because that’s what they really are. They are meant to inform everyone, not just the press about you and your business.</p>
<p>Once you have a small business information kit, you’ll find you’re often giving them when someone asks for information about your company&#8211;who you are, what you do, how you can benefit them. In fact, you’ll probably find you’ll give out almost as many of your information kits as your business cards.</p>
<p>Sometimes it’s more appropriate to simply hand out just your card, but other times, you might like to give someone more information than what’s on your business card.</p>
<p>Say you’re at a party and someone asks what you do. You’d probably just give them your business card. But your business card gives this business contact only the briefest information about your company.</p>
<p>So, you might also ask for their name and address, and send them an information kit the next day. Sending your information kit the next day also works as an important reminder of the evening’s discussion.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you’re a plumbing company, you might want to contact construction companies in your area to see if they’re interested in subcontracting your company from time to time, or better yet all the time!</p>
<p>Sending them just a business card probably won’t get you very far. Even sending a well-written letter introducing your company together with your business card probably wouldn’t be as effective as a complete information kit.</p>
<p>You could think of your business card as the “who and the where, and a little bit of the what” of the 6 interview questions—who, what, where, when, why and how. Your card probably has your business name, contact information and possibly a slogan, motto or some saying suggesting what you do.</p>
<p>Your information kit on the other hand, answers all the questions. It tells people who and where you are, just like your business card does. But instead of one little line suggesting what you do, your information kit tells people exactly what you do. How well it tells them what you do depends on how good your copywriting is.</p>
<p>And it tells them how to buy, (with your convenient order form for example, or by phone or fax, with cash, check or credit card) and when to buy (today, right now, before the special offer expires).</p>
<p>Your business card doesn’t have the room to tell people why they should buy from you, but your information package does. And not just by telling them you’re the biggest, the best, and of course the most innovative either.</p>
<p>The real secret is convincing people they can’t do without your product or service, remembering that along with a great description of your product or service, to consider your information kit from your clients’ perspective. Everyone wants to know how what you do can benefit them. How you can save them time or how you can save them money, or how you can make their life just a little bit easier.</p>
<p>One last word on presentation of your small business identity package. It’s almost as important as what you say. A professional image can go a long way in assuring potential clients your small business is the one they want to do business with.</p>
<p>You cannot compete with big companies without one, and you’ll be miles ahead of the small businesses that don’t have one. You can use the cash for a variety of purposes, including: capitalizing on other investment opportunities, paying off debts, funding college tuition and making major purchases.</p>
<p>How Selling Business Notes Works</p>
<p>Business notes are purchased at a discount—like all notes sold on the secondary market—to make them attractive to potential buyers. Without a discount, there is no incentive for investors to incur the risk of waiting three to five years or even longer to recoup their money. Historically, more than 90 percent of new business owners fail within the first five years. Therefore, there’s considerable risk attached to the purchase of any business note.</p>
<p>You may receive less than the full balance of your note when you sell it. However, the total cash you receive from the down payment and the sale of the note will usually be about the same as you would have received from an all-cash sale of your business. That&#8217;s because all-cash buyers can insist on a much lower selling price.</p>
<p>The amount of money you’ll actually receive for your note depends on a number of factors. But as a general rule, for a full purchase, you can expect to be paid 50 to 80 percent of the balance of the note. More specifically, the amount of cash your note can be sold for will be determined by three general components: the current economic environment, the terms of the note (payment amount, interest rate, length of payback, etc.) and the degree of risk or probability that the note holder will lose his/her money.</p>
<p>Criteria for Purchasing Notes</p>
<p>Certain guidelines must be met in order for a business note to be purchased. Naturally, first-position liens are eligible. Here are some other elements investors like to see:</p>
<p>• The business is in a profitable position, with evidence of operating cash flow.</p>
<p>• The buyer has good credit, which generally means a FICO score of at least 625.</p>
<p>• The buyer put down at least 30 percent of the purchase price in cash, which signifies that he/she is truly committed and able to weather down cycles.</p>
<p>• The principal owners have made a personal guarantee on the note.</p>
<p>• The note has been &#8220;seasoned,&#8221; meaning the buyer has made payments for at least two months. This shows that the buyer is happy with the purchase.</p>
<p>• The note should have a minimum face value of $15,000.00.</p>
<p>Structuring the Sale</p>
<p>There are a number of ways to structure the sale of your business note. You can sell the entire note, or only part of it. The most common way to sell a note is through a &#8220;partial purchase,&#8221; which involves selling only a certain number of the remaining payments on your note.</p>
<p>Note buyers can purchase any number of the remaining payments in a variety of ways. For example, let&#8217;s say you have a note with a balance of $80,000 payable in 240 monthly installments. If you need just $20,000 now, for whatever reason, the note buyer would calculate how many payments would need to be purchased to provide you with that specific amount of cash. Exactly which payments would be purchased would depend on your personal financial situation. You could sell:</p>
<p>• A certain number of the beginning payments on the note. (The note buyer might purchase the first 60 payments, and then you would receive the final 180 payments.)</p>
<p>• A certain number of the final payments on the note. (The buyer could purchase the final 180 payments, passing the first 60 payments through to you.)</p>
<p>• A certain percentage of each of the remaining 240 payments on the note. Perhaps 50 percent of each of the 240 installment payments could be purchased. (You would receive one half of each of the 240 payments.)</p>
<p>So which option in the above example would be best for you? It would depend on your current financial needs and future concerns. All of the alternatives would provide you with an immediate $20,000 cash payment. However, you might choose the first option if you need $20,000 today and require a future monthly cash flow beginning in five years. You might choose the second scenario if you needed $20,000 now and a monthly payment for the next five years until you start receiving your retirement benefits. Or you might choose the third option if you need $20,000 today and also want/need the monthly 50 percent payment for the next 20 years.</p>
<p>The Purchase Process</p>
<p>To purchase a business note, buyers will need to take an assignment of the security instrument (UCC-1 Financing Statement) and receive an endorsement of the promissory note.) But before getting to that stage, they will do the necessary due diligence and closely examine all aspects of the sales transaction of your business. The note buyers will handle all the paperwork for the purchase, from verifying all aspects of the deal and preparing/having recorded all of the necessary documents to make the change.</p>
<p>The note purchasing process takes an average four weeks to complete. If the sale of your business and the creation of the note was &#8220;typical,&#8221; then you should have your money within four weeks.</p>

<p>Let me explain with a short story. Take two hunters; one has a shotgun, the other a rifle. They&#8217;re both hungry and they&#8217;re both thinking duck al&#8217;orange for supper. Now, I know you don&#8217;t normally use a rifle for hunting duck, but this guy does, and who knows why.</p>
<p>Anyway, the ducks fly over the blind, and the guy with the shotgun jumps up and shoots wildly at the whole bunch. He figures he’s got a shotgun; he should be able to hit one of them. But he hasn&#8217;t waited until he sees them and he&#8217;s shot too soon. He completely misses the whole bunch, and the ducks veer off towards the hunter with the rifle.</p>
<p>The guy with the rifle (who&#8217;s seen the whole thing and is laughing to himself) stands quietly watching them fly overhead. He sites the biggest, fattest duck in his scope, holds his breath and fires. He can&#8217;t miss, and he gets to eat duck al&#8217;orange for supper that night, while the guy with the shotgun goes hungry.</p>
<p>You can think of your marketing the same way. If you just fire wildly at the whole market using a shot-gun effect, you&#8217;re liable to miss everyone. But if you research your target market and take aim at it with carefully thought-out marketing strategies, you&#8217;re liable to hit your target again and again.</p>
<p>Does it make more sense to you to fire wildly at the whole bunch, taking the chance you’re going to hit something or to take careful aim, one shot at a time? Sure, your target is smaller, but every shot is going to count! Which means, the chances of hitting your target are that much greater.</p>
<p>So how do you go about defining your target market?</p>
<p>You could start by asking questions. Brainstorm. Talk to friends, family, neighbors. Are they interested in your product or service? Would they buy it? Why or why not?</p>
<p>Whether your target market is business to consumer, or business to business, you’ll want to know who your best target is. Get down to the bare-bone details. Who exactly is your target market? You want to know them well.</p>
<p>If your business has a consumer target market, you’ll want to know:<br />
• Are they women, men or both?<br />
• How much money do they earn?<br />
• What do they do for a living?<br />
• What level of education do they have?<br />
• How do they spend their extra cash<br />
• Are they married, single, divorced?<br />
• Do they have children?<br />
• What kind of lifestyle do they lead?<br />
• What are their attitudes and beliefs<br />
• What are their interests?</p>
<p>And, if your target market is business to business you’ll want to know at least:<br />
• Type of industry<br />
• Annual sales<br />
• Number of employees<br />
• Whether they’re stable<br />
• Their location<br />
• Whether their business is seasonal<br />
• Who makes the decisions</p>
<p>Once you’ve finished, you should have a good idea who your target market is. You might even want to go one step further and write a statement defining your ideal target market client.</p>
<p>Here’s an example for a weight loss product. “Our typical client is a young, married mother in her late twenties to mid thirties looking to lose post-pregnancy weight gain.”</p>
<p>Good luck finding your target market. It’ll help you identify marketing strategies that will work, and it’ll focus your marketing message because you’ll know exactly who you’re talking to.</p>
